Selena Gomez recently got an award for Woman of the Year, and she dedicated it to her friend and kidney donor.
Earlier this year, Gomez shared a picture of her and her friend, Francia Raisia in their hospital beds to let fans of the 25 year old star know about the surgery. Raisia donated her kidney to her best friend Selena after the singer fell gravely ill, and required a kidney transplant due to complications with the illness lupus.
When she received the award, Selena took Francia along to the Billboard Women in Music awards, which was held last night, where she was presented the Woman of the Year award. As she accepted the award she paid tribute to her friend and her generous act, saying that she felt lucky, and Francia ‘saved her life’
“I think Francia should be getting this award. She saved my life… I feel incredibly lucky” Selena explained as she broke down in tears. “Honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful for the position that I’ve been given in my career from 7 to 14 to now”
“I feel like for me, with my music, I’ve been able to illustrate the things that I want.” She added “And I’m reminded by a team of people who believe in me even when I don’t myself, and I couldn’t be more luckier.”
Earlier in the evening, Selena walked the red carpet while chatting with Billboard representatives about the award, and getting back with her former flame Justin, as well as how lucky she feels to be in an industry that supports women.
“Honestly, I don’t know if I feel like I deserve it sometimes but I am so honored to be part of an industry where there is real movement for women. I think it’s important, I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
