The 26 year old songwriter topped the Spotify list with 6.3 billion streams, taking the title of most streamed artist from the 2016 winner, Drake, who placed second this year, followed by The Weekend, Kendrick Lamar, and the Chainsmokers. Although there were no females in the Top 5 most streamed artists, Rihanna took the spot as No.1 most streamed female artist of this year, followed by Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez.
Sheeran also took the top spot for Spotify’s biggest album of the year, with his record divide being streamed 3.1 billion times during the year, while Shape of You was named most streamed song of the year, having 1.4 billion streams.
“Ed Sheeran absolutely dominated this year with the release of his record-breaking album, Divide,” Chief content officer of Spotify, Stefan Blom said. “There is no doubt that 2017 was The Year of Ed Sheeran, and we are thrilled that so many millions of music fans have discovered, listened to, and shared his music on Spotify. Congratulations to Ed on an amazing achievement.”
The remix of Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber was the second most streamed song of the year, with the original version of the song being third, having Despacito be in 2 spots of the Top 3.
Hopefully the Spotify lists will be a boost to Sheeran’s confidence, after it probably took a hit since he wasn’t nominated for any of the main Grammy awards, but only some smaller, rather insignificant ones, despite his album and songs performing exceptionally well during the year.
